norms and labels
BioApply bags and packaging comply with the most demanding norms and have obtained the following labels:
The European Norm EN 13432
This norm sets and defines the standard for "the value of packaging characteristics according to decomposition and biological breakdown". It determines "the test diagrams and criteria of evaluation for the final acceptance of packaging". Nowadays such terms as "biodegradation", "biodegradable" and/or "compostable" are more and more frequently used but often inaccurately which, as a result, leads to misunderstandings.
The European Norm EN 13432 (OJ of the European Communities of July 12, 2001) resolves these problems by defining the characteristics a material/product must possess in order to be claimed biodegradable and compostable.
This norm requires :
- Biodegradability : at least 90% of total mass must be biodegraded in less than 6 months.
- Disintegration : the final compost (remaining 10%) is screened with a 2 mm sieve, the mass of test material residues with dimensions bigger than 2 mm.
- Quality of compost : must not be reduced by other packaging material added to the compost. Good quality is verified through obligatory eco-toxicological tests.
- They come with an OK Compost certificate
